Following on from last week's Vesuvian theme, Genuine Naples Yellow- Lead Antimoniate- was once believed to be a natural mineral sourced from Mount Vesuvius, due to its frequent use as a status symbol in Pompeiian and Herculanean mansions.
The real story is more interesting- it is now thought to be one of the world's oldest synthetic colours, first used as a pottery glaze in Mesopotamia! The multi-stage process of chemical reactions required to synthesise the final pigment must have taken some experimentation, and gives a fascinating glimpse into the science of the time!

Products may display as in stock online, however during the period of the order being received to our physical store, the item may have changed to a status of 'out of stock' due to sales crossover from instore purchases.
