From an artist’s perspective, a gesso brush is a working tool built for preparation rather than finesse. Unlike standard painting brushes, gesso brushes are wider, sturdier and designed to move thick, gritty primer evenly across a surface. They need strong spring and durability to withstand scrubbing into canvas or panel without splaying. Traditional hog bristle has long been favoured for this task, while modern stiff synthetic fibres now offer excellent resistance, easy cleaning and consistent performance for repeated ground preparation.
