The original Gamboge was derived from the powdered resin of the brindleberry tree native to Southeastern Asia. According to Theravāda Buddhist tradition, it is the dye with which the first devotees of Buddha Siddhartha Gautama used to dye their robes, and it remains in use dyeing the robes of monks to this day. Natural Gamboge has fallen out of favour in painting due to its extremely fugitive lightfastness, and has largely been replaced by the very similar hues of Aureolin and Nickel Azo Yellow. The result is a warm yellow as stunning as the original. Mixing it with violets like Deep Purple can achieve extraordinary results!
